Studies and interview guides

Write an interview guide

Write the guide yourself or generate it with AI, and what makes a good one.

The interview guide tells the AI interviewer what this study is about. It’s added to the base interviewer prompt, which already covers how to interview well (open questions, one at a time, neutral follow-ups), so focus on what’s unique to your study. Choose base interviewer prompt above the guide to read it.

Two ways to write it

  • Write it yourself in the box. Up to 5,000 characters.
  • Generate with AI: choose the button above the box. Optionally add Topics to cover, then choose Generate guide. The AI drafts topics in order, with open questions and follow-ups, sized to your session length. It takes up to half a minute, and you can edit everything afterwards.

Generating needs a research goal of at least 20 characters. If you already have a guide, generating again replaces it, and the button says Replace guide so you know.

What a good guide includes

  • The topics to cover, in order, and roughly how much time each deserves.
  • Anything the interviewer should ask about specifically, and anything to avoid.
  • When to show each image, video or prototype, by its title. For example: “After they describe their last purchase, show Checkout prototype.”
  • Who the participants are, if it changes how to talk to them.

Plan about one topic for every 4 to 5 minutes of interview, leaving time to open and close.

Generating a guide and checking it are free; they don’t use interview minutes. You can do either up to 30 times an hour.
